Subterranean Termite Damage
The subterranean termite is the most common termite that can be found everywhere except for Alaska, The damage that subterranean termites do is very obvious. These termites need moisture from the ground so they create tunnels from the earth to their food source. This makes finding them relatively simple. Look for a mud tube which is a “tunnel” constructed by a termite. This connects their nest located in the earth, to their food source. It is usually about the size of a number two pencil and will be made of soil.
Drywood Termite Damage
Drywood termites are found most commonly in the Southern portion of the United States. As their name implies, they sustain their existence from consuming drywood from the framing of homes, furniture, and really old wood structures such as barns and historic homes. Newer homes will rarely have drywood termites as the moisture content in the wood is to high to accommodate a drywood termite colony.
Dampwood Termite Damage
Dampwood termites, as their name indicates, can only be found in dampwood. Wood with a very high moisture content. The dampwood termite does not require contact with the soil like the Subterranean termite.
Dampwood termites are usually responsible for destroying wood that has ground contact such as utility poles, old fallen logs or wood piles. Very seldom are dampwood termites a problem for homeowners. The wood these creatures desire is to damp to build homes or buildings with.
Formosan Termite Damage
Formosan termites are labeled the most destructive termite in the United States. The Formosan termite is categorized as a subterranean termite, however it does not need to go to the ground to get water. The Formosan termite will form a nest inside a structure. These nests are made of chewed wood, soil and undigested cellulose. The Formosan termite does not need to get to ground for water.
This is what makes this termite very destructive. It makes its nest where it lives which eliminates the need for the long journey back to its nest. This allows the Formosan Termite colony to eat 24/7.
